bronze sculpture, brown patina, with marking of Barbedienne foundry
Etude Coutau-Bégarie, Drouot-Paris. An impressive price for a famous sculpture by Rodin. This bronze only carried an estimate of one million francs. The reason for this result was that it bore the Barbedienne foundry marking instead of Rudier, the main founder for Rodin's works, which have been alas much copied. The Barbedienne marking implied a sure guarantee regarding the period this cast was produced.
