inscribed A. Rodin with the foundry mark Alexis Rudier Fondeur, Paris, also stamped with the raised signature and numbered 55 in white paint on the underside of the base, bronze, dark green patina, conceived in 1887 and cast in 1927
Sotheby's New York. The model for this sculpture was Pignatelli who also posed for Rodin's St Jean Baptiste of 1877-78. It was long believed that it was a preliminary study for this St Jean Baptiste until it was ascertained as an independent work. This sculpture is nevertheless a powerful example of Rodin's work. It was conceived ten years after the death of the artist and given by Alexis Rudier to his son Eugène. The final bid tallied with the estimate.
