marble, executed in 1935-36
Sotheby's, New York, . A fine work by Barbara Hepworth and a good bid especially as it carried a pre-sale estimate of US $ 100,000-150,000. After a group of figurative sculptures executed in the 1920's, she began to work with an abstract vocabulary in the 1930's. The works were more formal and all traces of naturalism had disappeared. For some years she was absorbed in the relationship of space, in size, texture and weight, as well as in the tensions between the forms.
