Sotheby's, New York. Painted in Paris this painting is closely related to “Autoportrait dans l'Atelier” now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyons. He represented himself as a Japanese painter seated on the floor of his studio depicted in a ruminative pose as he begins to trace a line with the brush in his hand. Widely known in Paris for his eccentric clothes and gregarious personality, he chose to represent himself in the clutter of his studio surrounded by folios of drawings, brushes, an ink stone and his low workable. Perched on his back, his cat gazes enigmatically into the distance while two works in progress, as well as a framed, recently completely work, “Femme Endormie”, now in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes of Buenos Aires, are tacked on the wall behind him. Foujita mainly produced works on paper until 1920 and started to perfect his painting technique thereafter. This work carried a pre-sale estimate of $ 1 to 1,5 million.
