Sotheby's, New York. Firmin-Girard demonstrated his artistic skills at an early age being recognised as an accomplished draughtsman. His talent was quickly noticed and he gained entry into the Charles Gleyre studio at 16. The latter for the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris then recommended him. He first painted religious subjects and portraits, worked in publishing houses and found employment with decorative painters who covered the ceilings and walls of homes belonging to wealthy Parisians with historical and mythological scenes. Firmin-Girard's fame and reputation was founded on his scenes of Parisian life during the Belle Époque period. Because of his ability to capture the bustling activities of Parisian streets and fairs, he was rightly nicknamed"the King of the open air" by critics. He was a frequent and successful exhibitor at the Paris salons and in 1896 he was awarded the Légion d'Honneur. This painting carried an estimate of US $ 100,000 to 150,000.
