Sotheby's London. This portrait was probably painted in Antwerp shortly after Van Dyck's return from Italy in the autumn of 1627 or a year or so before his departure for the English Court in the spring of 1632. By this date, Van Dyck, who had been appointed painter to the Regent, the widowed Archduchess Isabella, was unquestionably the leading portraitist in the Southern Netherlands. The silhouette of the sitter's silks is relieved by the blue mellow ochre of the architectural details and the deep russet of the curtain behind. In terms of court portraiture, such images were unsurpassed anywhere in Europe at this date. The identity of the sitter has however not been firmly established. It carried a top pre-sale estimate of £ 350,000.
