Sotheby's New York. This bid was just under the low pre-sale estimate of $ 16 million despite the fact that such work was one of Monet's masterpieces. In December 1871 Monet had moved to Argenteuil, a Paris suburb on the Seine. During the early 1870's Paris was recovering from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and the subsequent period of violent civil strife known as The Commune. This painting is typical of Monet's classic Impressionist style of the mid-1870's during which he painted his wife seated in their garden, reading, walking through the trees and reading in a meadow. This work is remarkable as a quintessential statement of the themes explored in «A Day in the Country» but the highly abstract character of the brushwork, the precocious composition and the interpretation of the subject underscore the image as particularly advanced and modern.
