Sotheby's New York. Between 1888 and 1891, Monet executed more than thirty canvasses of haystacks or grainstacks situated in a field near his house in Giverny. The artist selected a group of fifteen paintings for exhibition as a series at the Durand-Ruel Gallery in Paris in 1891. There are thirty two paintings of haystacks in the catalogue raisonné of Monet's work. Two are signed and dated 1888, five were painted in 1889 or 1889-90, of which three are signed and dated 89, three are signed and dated 1890 and twenty-two, including the present work, are assigned to 1890-91, of which twenty-one are signed and dated 1891. It is worth to note that in 1891, Monet devoted an entire year of his life to observe the existence of a haystack in the milieu of changing reflections of light. The artist appeared particularly keen to paint series as he did with various views of the Rouen cathedral or the pond in his garden in Giverny. This painting carried an estimate of between US $ 8 and 12 million.
