Cheverny, France, Etude Rouillac. This painting carried a stupid estimate of 2 millions FF (US $ 320,000) while the experts for this sale already expected it to fetch five times more the day preceding the sale. It had a solid pedigree and had been exhibited for many years. This bid was the highest ever recorded in France during the first six months of 1999. Early in 1883, Monet decided to return to Le Havre and the neighbouring sea-resort of Etretat where he painted many views. His work in Etretat gave Monet the idea of producing series, which he started with the Rouen cathedral and continued with the water-lilies in the garden of his property in Giverny. These paintings produced in Etretat where usually finished in his studio and sold to Durand- Ruel his dealer who exhibited 56 of his paintings on March 1883.
