Sotheby's London. A superb bid for this dramatic depiction of Christ on the Cross, which is a fine, and previously unrecorded autograph work dating from El Greco's late maturity. As one of only a few versions of the subjects painted entirely by El Greco himself, it constitutes an important addition to his oeuvre. This painting, due to its small format, was probably intended as a modello for a large altar piece or retained in the artist's studio to aid in the production of further replicas. In terms of quality, the present picture is without doubt the best of El Greco's small-scale depictions of Christ on the Cross in a landscape. The appearance of a signature at the base of the cross during recent cleaning further underlined its autograph nature and its status as the only unquestionably signed version of the composition. There are several versions of the subject known but only a few have been considered as by El Greco himself.
