Sotheby's London. Like Van Gogh, Cézanne is considered as a major master of modern painting and this bid, US $ 1 million above the top pre-sale estimate was in conformity with the quality of such work. Cézanne studied painting in Aix-en-Provence in 1856 and worked in this region during many years. While in Paris in 186, he befriended Guillaumin and Pissarro but was not admitted at the School of Beaux-Arts. Working under the influence of Pissarro in Pontoise, north of Paris, he turned to Impressionism from which he gradually swayed away to find his own style which was to herald the birth of modern painting and Cubism in the early years of the 20th century. Cézanne was not an easy man and became lonesome. Now a legend, his works usually fetch high prices at auction making him one of the most expensive artists in the world after Van Gogh and Monet.
