Sotheby's New York. The final bid outstreched the top pre-sale estimate of US $ 70,000 for these small paintings based on prototypes by Pieter Brueghel the Elder. The Birdnester relates in composition to a painting of 1568 in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna while the Man filling in the well derives from one of a series of proverb paintings in the Musée Mayer van den Bergh. These proverb paintings were a favorite of the Brueghel family. The two proverbs represented in these paintings mean he fills in the well after the calf has fallen in (to do something too late to avert disaster) and he who knows where the nest is, knows how to get it. The final bidder probably thought in his own way that prodigality regarding money was not an incurable disease...
