Sotheby's New York(Collection of Eleanore and Daniel Saidenberg). A good price for such a small work, however important as it was painted in 1910-11. In the summer of 1910, Picasso went to Cadaquès, while Braque went to l'Estaque where he stayed for three months. It was during this period that the convergence of Picasso's and Braque's styles came to the closest, although profound differences in temperament were shortly to lead to major differences in their exploration of the Cubist syntax. In the present work, the forms of the glass and pieces of fruit emerge only slowly from the scaffolding of transparent plaes consisting of richly orchestrated dabs of ochre and neutral coloured pigment. As in many works of the first phase of Cubism, Braque used an oval format as this allowed for greater concentration on the subject as he felt he could regain the sense of the horizontal and vertical.
