oil on canvas dated «Munchen 1883»
Sotheby's New York. A really good price for such a work, which carried a top pre-sale estimate of $ 600,000. This long-lost masterpiece was inspired by Bauernfeind's first visit to Palestine during the 1880-81 years. The brilliancy of the Mediterranean colors he had experienced during his extensive sojourn in Italy in 1873-74 had left a lasting impression on the young artist and may well have been the deciding influence for wishing to see the Middle East at first hand.
