Drouot-MontaigneBasquiat and Warhol produced this work on the request of Bruno Bischofberger, a dealer who induced their meeting in 1982. Nevertheless, this bid is far below the price such a work would have fetched seven years ago when the Contemporary art market was at its peak. During this sale a Basquiat self-portrait called VNDRZ was sold for 900,000 FF (US $ 155,000). In 1990, it would have been worth three times this price. Basquiat was hailed as a genius by Warhol and big pundits of the art market. The fact that he died from a drug overdose in 1988 was enough to make him a legendary artist. It is true that Basquiat brought something new in the world of art but to describe as a giant of painting is something of an insult to some of the great artists of the 1970's whose works are underpriced.
