after Antonio Allegri da Correggio (1494-1534), oil on paper laid down on panel
Sotheby's , New York. This painting was simply a copy after Correggio and was only expected to fetch between US $ 70,000 and 90,000. It was during a tour of the artistic centers of North Italy at the beginning of his career that Annibale Carracci must have encountered the works of Correggio, an artist who was to have a significant influence on his work. In fact, the present work derives its composition from the figure of the Madonna and Child in the famous painting of The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine now in the Louvre Museum, Paris. This work was in Modena until at least 1582 when the family of the originally owners were bullied into a sale by Cardinal Luigi d'Este to Caterina Nobile Sforza, Contessa di Santa Fiora and it seems likely that Carracci saw it in 1585 or shortly thereafter and made the present beautifully painted ricordo at that time.
