Sotheby's New York. Coypel depicted here Juno wearing the girdle (belt) of Venus seducing the unwitting Jupiter; his eagle still clutching thunderbolts but almost crushed by the two figures reaching for one another. Juno's peacock gazes down from its cloud perched on two putti lighting each other's torches on the ground below. The volcanic eruption behind indicates the power of the act over Nature herself. The high-keyed palette and finely-depicted flowers and other details reveal Coypel at his best. This painting carried a high pre-sale estimate of US $ 175,000.
