Sotheby's London . A world auction record for the artist which almost quadrupled the top pre-sale estimate. Jawlensky was born in Russia and first was an officer in the Imperial guard in Saint-Petersburg where he studied art at the same time. He then went to Munich in 1896 and befriended Wassily Kandinsky. Influenced by Cézanne and Van Gogh, his meeting with Matisse was a turning point in his career. His works produced between 1905 and 1910 betrayed the influence of the French Fauve painters. In 1913, he became interested in Cubism and started to paint female faces with enormous oval eyes and long noses and necks. Sticking to such representations, he simplified his style in the following years but was forced to reduce his production from 1929 after his hands were stricken by arthritis.
