Laurin-Guilloux-Buffetaud group, Drouot-Paris. A surprising bid for a small format by John Singer Sargent who spent most of his life in Europe. Sargent studied painting in Paris in the studio of Carolus Duran where he met Edouard Pailleron, a French poet and academician who became one of his first patrons. Sargent painted his portrait and was invited at his Savoy country home in Ronjoux to produce the portraits of his wife and two children, notably that of Edouard Junior. During the same sale a sketch by Sargent representing Mme Pailleron sold for 1 700 000 FF (US $ 263,500).
