London, Sotheby's. There had been some uncertainty about the authorship of this painting after it had been given to Schalcken in 1934 then to Adriaen van der Werff in 1935 but doubts were finally lifted by Dr Meijer of the RKD before the sale. Therefore biddings smashed the £ 40,000 high estimate to reach a record price. Nonetheless, this picture produced around 1690 was truly a beautiful work.
