The main explanation for this price might lie in the fact that the man portrayed is pointing a finger to a map of Georgia. James Edward Oglethorpe was elected to the House of Commons in 1722 where he held the seat of Haslemere for 32 years. he was chairman of the committee investigating the penal conditions for debtors and the need for a buffer colony between South Carolina and Spanish Florida fitted his proposal to establish an asylum for debtors. Oglethorpe and 19 associates were granted a charter to make them the trustees of Georgia. They arrived in Charleston, South Carolina in 1733 with 116 carefully chosen colonists and founded Savannah in February of that year. He returned to England ten years later and became an intimate friend and associate of Samuel Johnson.
