Cheverny, western France, Rouillac Group. An explosive bid for such a small watercolour by Bonington, whose favourite themes were beaches and seascapes with incredible realistic skies. Historical subjects are usually not his best subjects. Alongside Turner, Bonington much inspired Impressionist painters after 1865.
