A long lost oil on copper painting by Orazio Gentileschi, father of the famous Artemisia Gentileschi, was found in the collection of the Viscount Powerscourt in Ireland. The painting representing a Holy Family with St John the Baptist as a child will be sold on July 6th 2000 by Sotheby's in London with an estimate of £ 1,5 to 2 million. It will be the most important work by Gentileschi to appear at auction after the “Discovery of Moses” from the Castle Howard collection which sold for £ 5 million in December 1995 at Sotheby's. Born in Pisa in 1565, Gentileschi became official painter to King Charles 1st in 1626 and it is therefore not uncommon to find works by his hand in the British Isles.
