Sotheby's New York.  This magnificent drawing fetched a record price on the market. Apparently executed between 1561 and 1562 it was of the very small number of drawings by Michelangelo to remain in private hands. It might have been a large exploratory drawing made whilst considering the treatment of the subject for a presentation sheet. This drawing was in the collection of Cardinal Antonio Santa Croce (1598-1641) and then in that of Pierre Crozat (1665-1740) a French financier who gathered some 19,000 drawings during his lifetime. It then was acquired by Conseiller Jean-Baptiste-François Nourry who died in 1784 and by Armand-Louis de Mestral de Saint-Saphorin (1738-1805).
