probably made in Geneva, second half of the 19th Century, maker's mark “APD” with prestige marks resembling to that of Henry Clavel, centre set with a miniature, French school, circa 1680/1700 London Christie's. A magnificent box indeed though made during the second half of the 19th Century. It is somewhat difficult to explain why this bid went well beyond the £ 5,000 to 7,000 estimate. It was certainly not the 17th Century miniature set on its cover, which made such a big difference in price. We have to admit this was a great piece but not worth the final bid and it would have been a different story if this box had been made during the 18th Century. |
