Sotheby's New-York. The pre-sale estimate of between US $ 60,000 and 80,000 apparead ridiculous compared with the final bid. This tantalizing picture was formerly attributed to Cesare Dandini but it may be firmly given to Dolci on stylistic grounds. Dolci in fact did borrow and adapt compositions of the older artists of his native city of Florence. However, the strong coloration and gem-like finish of the Archangel Michael are Dolci's and Dolci's alone. The physionomy of the archangel relates so closely to that of the Saint John the Evangelist which recently appeared at auction (Christie's New York, Jan 11th 1995) that it has been suggested that Dolci used the same model for both paintings. This picture was dated to the 1640's
