oil on paper re-mounted on canvas, signed and dated 1935 lower left Etude Ferri, Drouot-Paris. A good price for this painting by Lhote though explained by its very large size. Carrying only a 350,000 FF estimate, this painting had been ordered by Louis Moynat, an architect, to ornate the living-room of his house. The latter had asked André Lhote to produce a work mixing Cubism and neo-realism. Several paintings by Lhote were offered in this sale and some of them sold well such as a motor-cycle race of 1936 which fetched 450 000 FF (three times the estimate), a still life with ribbons dated 1917, which went for 480 000 FF and another work representing the painter and his model, 1920, which reached 460 000 FF. |
