Sotheby's New York, against a pre-sale estimate of $ 10 to 15 million. In the spring of 1891 Monet began a group of 24 paintings of poplars located two miles from his house in Giverny. The poplars lined the banks of the Epte river and Monet selected a spot where the river bent back on itself twice before disappearing from view. The series was completed  before the end of 1891 and the poplars were exceedingly well received by collectors and critics.
