Sotheby's New York. This work carried an estimate of between US $ 80,000 and 120,000. During his sojourn in England between 1729 and 1739, Amigoni turned almost exclusively to the production of elegant and refined mythological subjects. In Protestant England, the ground had been well prepared for Amigoni some sixteen years earlier by his fellow countryman Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini who had introduced the light and airy touches of the Venetian rococo to the dark and format houses of the English upper classes. The present work would seem to date from this English period, not least because the present work is an English frame that would appear to date to the 1730's and due to the fact that it has been in the family of the last owner since the beginning of the century.
