Sotheby's, London. A bid which tallied with the top pre-sale estimate. This portrait is to be dated to Key's full maturity in the 1550s and is comparable to his portrait of a man in the Koninklijk Museum, Antwerp. He was one of the most successful portraitists of his generation ranking alongside his contemporary Anthonis Mor and the slightly older Pieter Pourbus. He studied with Lambert in Liege around 1540 but settled in Antwerp shortly after.
