.  Lord Craven (1606-1697)  gained military distinction under Prince of Orange in 1632. A few years later he began his life long devotion to Elizabeth, called «The Winter Queen». He was taken prisoner by the Emperor's troops in 1637 and ransomed himself before joining the «Winter Queen» in her exile court at the Hague where he remained until the restoration of Charles II. The Queen came with him to England and lived at his house until her death in 1662. Lord Craven commanded the Coldstream Guards and was created Earl in 1665. This historical miniature was certainly was one the best painted by Alexander Cooper who worked for many years on the European continent. This stunning portrait, so much vivid, had a high estimate of £ 15,000 which was smashed. This was a record price for any work by this great artist.
