. The final price more than doubled the high pre-sale estimate of £ 6,000 for this rather charming miniature which was one of Wood's best works.  His portraits are usually natural and expressive and are characterised by his way of painting in broad, crossing brush strokes like the links of a chain and his colouring is warm and pleasant.Surprisingly the sitter was not really a beautiful woman but the portrait had enough charm to seduce the final bidder.
