Etude Tajan, Drouot-Paris . A solid bid for such decorative scientific instrument which carried an estimate of 300,000-400,000 FF. Such sphere was believed to have been invented by Archimedes or even before him by Anaximander during the sixth Century B-.C. This instrument materialised the Ptolomaic astronomical system conceived during the second Century and which placed the Earth as the centre of the universe until Copernic came forward with his new theory at the beginning of the 16th Century. However Copernic's finding remained questioned during several decades and such spheres continued to be produced until at least the first half of the 18th Century. The terrestrial globe included in this piece was bearing the names of Gerard and Leonhart Valk, who were active as publishers in Amsterdam at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18 th Century.
