inlaid with silver with concentric decor and medallions, Mameluk Art, Egypt 1294-1341, weight 17 kilos,
Etude de Ricqlès, Drouot-Paris. An exceptional bid regarding the pre-sale estimate of one million francs. It is however true that this piece carried a famed provenance - it once belonged to count Odon de Toulouse-Lautrec - and that it was exceptional in view of its quality and dimension. No doubt that it was bought by a rich collector of the Middle-East for whom the price bore no real importance since this salver probably represented in his mind the very best example of Mameluk art.
