Many American artists studied and worked in Paris during the 19th and 20th centuries. Here is an exhaustive list of the best-known engravers, draughtsmen, painters and sculptors who crossed the Atlantic sea in the hope of reaching fame. a

Abbey Edwin-Austin (1852-1911) who was a member of the Fine Arts Society of Paris and was awarded the French Legion of Honour.

Abbott Eleonore Plaisted (1875- ?) who studied painting in Paris with Lucien Simon and Charles Cottet. She exhibited her works in Paris.

Abernethy Miss Mez (18th-20th Century) who lived in France in 1905-1906.

Abramofsky Ismael (Active 20th Century) who was born in Ukraine and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1923.

Abrams or Abranz Lucien (19th-20th Century) who exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1912 and 1913.

Alexander Francis (1800-1880 or 1881) who visited Paris in 1853.

Alexander John-White (1856-1915) who studied painting in Paris. A member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, he exhibited his works in the French capital in 1893 and was awarded a gold medal. He also took part in the International Exhibition of 1900 at the Salons of 1902 and 1909. Alexander was awarded the French Legion of Honour cross in 1901.

Allen Marion née Boyd (1862-1941) who exhibited her paintings at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1914.

Allen Thomas (1849-1924) who came to Paris in 1872 and worked in the suburb of Ecouen for several years.

Amans Jacques (1801-1888) who exhibited several times in Paris between 1831 and 1837. He died there in 1888.

Ames Francis P. (Active 19th-20th Century) who studied with Courtois and Collin in Paris

Ammirato-Collins Mary (Active early 20th Century) who studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. She exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1937

Andersen Hendrick-Christian (1872- ?). This sculptor, born in Denmark, exhibited one of his works at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1913.

Anderson Abraham-Archibald (1847- ?) who studied painting in Paris in 1873 with Bonnat and Cabanel.

Anderson Jesse Sylvester (Active 20th Century). This sculptor studied with Marcel Landowski in Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1922.

Anderson Karl (1874- ?) who studied painting in Paris

Andrade Magda (Active 20th Century) who was born in Venezuela. She worked in Paris and exhibited at the Salon de la Nationale in 1934 and 1935, at the Salons d'Automne and
des Indépendants between 1935 and 1938.

Andre Carl (Born in 1935) who exhibited his works several times in France.

Andrea John de (Born in 1941) This sculptor specialising in life-size striking representations of naked humans exhibited at the Paris Biennial in 1971

Andrew Richard (1867-?) who studied painting in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Beaux-Arts school

Andrews Eliphalet Frazer (1835-1915) who studied painting with Bonnat in Paris in 1874

Andrews Joseph (1806-1873) This engraver visited Paris In 1840.

Anschutz or Anshutz Thomas-Pollock (1851-1912) who studied at the Académie Julian in Paris.

Appleby Theodore (Born in 1923) who studied in Paris with Fernand Léger between 1950 et 1953. He exhibited his works at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1950 and 1951.

Archer Edmund (20th Century) who studied at the Académie Colarossi in Paris in the late 1920's.

Areffi Ludmilla (20th Century) who exhibited one of her her works, an Interior, at the Salon de la Nationale in 1934

Armstrong David Maitland (1836-1918) who studied in Paris. He was the head of the American section at the Paris Universal exhibition in 1900 and was awarded the Legion of Honour.

Armstrong William Thomas Lilburn (Active at the end of the 19th Century) who studied painting in Paris.

Arnold Pansy-Davis (Active 20th Century) This sculptor exhibited his works in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1931 and 1932.

Arnoldi Charles (Born in 1946) A sculptor who exhibited his works at the Paris Biennial in 1973.

Aronson Harry H (Active 1st half of the 20th Century) who studied painting in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens and belonged to the American Art Association of Paris.
