Colman has distinguished himself by painting controversial depictions of figurative subjects, from single figures to groups of people and animals in elaborate architectonic settings. Over the years, his increasingly complex depictions of figures have continued to enchant or shock, to the viewers delight. Although characterized as one of Los Angeles pre-eminent, young low-brow artists, Colman's expanding critical acclaim and renown continues to evade categorization.
Colman's latest group of compelling and contentious paintings and drawings attests to his continuing exploration of figurative art. With their superb technical craftsmanship, achieved through exacting detail and compositional complexity, graphic rhythms and refined surfaces, combined with an edgy erotic subject matter, Colman's paintings continue to stimulate vigorous debate in high and low circles.
Richard Colman received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Swindle and Art Prostitute. Ginko Press will publish his forthcoming monograph, I Was Just Leaving. The artist currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.
