This sale paid great tribute to the expertise and efforts of the many people at Christie's who are involved with Russian Art Week. The afternoon's auction of Important Russian Pictures including the Somov Collection took place in a busy saleroom and saw spirited and competitive bidding, particularly for works of exceptional quality which are fresh to the market. More than 20 artist records were broken, including those for Bogoliubov, Levitan, Grigor'ev and Annenkov, whose Portrait of Aleksandr Nikolaevich Tikhonov attracted significant international interest and sold for over £2.26 million, doubling its pre-sale estimate. The Somov Collection, which presented some of the last works by the artist to remain in private hands, best represents the appetite of international collectors for market-fresh works; the Collection was 100% sold and realised £6,318,900 / $13,016,934, more than three times the pre-sale estimate. We look forward to the concluding auctions of Russian Art Week which take place on Thursday and Friday. |
