Anthony Phillips, International Director of Silver and Russian Works of Art, and Alexis de Tiesenhausen, International Head of Russian Art: We are very pleased with the results of this sale, and particularly for the record price realised by The Rothschild Fabergé Egg; the quality of the craftsmanship, combined with its exceptional condition, rarity, provenance, and the fact that it is the only example to have remained in the ownership of the family for whom it was commissioned, all combine to make The Rothschild Egg a truly magnificent work of art. During the last two months, we have exhibited the Egg in London, Moscow, Paris, Geneva and New York, and many thousands of people have flocked to Christie's to see and appreciate its magnificence for themselves. Elsewhere in the sale, we saw determined bidding across the board, with many lots selling far above their pre-sale estimates.
