The Fall 2008 Asian Art Week at Christie's New York between September 15 and 18, 2008 realized $51,142,538, the second highest total ever for Asian Art Week at Christie's New York. The auctions enjoyed active participation by collectors from Asia and the West across four full days of sales, with many Asia-based clients participating by telephone and through Christie's LIVE™.
Christie's led the week with the Indian art sales when Masterpieces from the Zimmerman Family Collection, Masterpieces of Himalayan Bronzes, Indian and Southeast Asian Art, and South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art totaled$26.8 million. The Chinese Works of Art category with sales of Important Chinese Snuff Bottles from the J&J Collection, Part V, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, and Masterworks of Ancient and Imperial China totaled $19.3 million. Japanese and Korean Art achieved $5 million.
Theow H. Tow, Deputy Chairman, Christie's Americas and Asiacommented: "Christie's
achieved the second highest total for Asian Art sales in New York this week, a testament to the underlying strength of the Asian art market and the sales put together by Christie's specialists. Asian art is truly an international collecting area. This season saw Asians in particular participating strongly in all collecting categories, both classical and contemporary. That supreme quality, exceptional provenance and excellent condition is much sought after was exemplified by the results of the superb early Ming white glazed vase, meiping, from the Property of the Ping Y. Tai Foundation, which achieved a world auction record for a Ming Dynasty monochrome porcelain at $2,770,500. We look forward to the continuing sales of Property from the Ping Y. Tai Foundation, including important classical Chinese paintings and the magnificent imperial famille rose "butterfly" vase at Christie's Hong Kong on December 2nd and 3rd."
