SOTHEBY'S DEC 8, 2010 SALE OF OLD MASTERS

Sotheby's recorded a series of high prices during its december 8, 2010 day and evening sales in London with a painting by George Stubbs sold at over 10 million GBP though under its low estimate.

During the day sale, a large 18th Century portrait (232 x 400 cm) by Henry Pickering of Sir Wolstan Dixie, 4th BT. (1701-1767) of Bosworth Hall, Leicestershire, and his family seated around a harpsichord fetched 223,250 GBP (inclusive of buyer's premium) against a high estimate of 30,000.

The evening sale was more active with a painting by George Stubbs (1724-1806) titled "Brood mares and foals"  (99,7 x 188,6 cm) that reached 10,121,250 GBP against an estimate of 10 to 15 million while a View of the Venice Piazetta looking north (81,7 x 128,2 cm) by Giovanni Antonio Canal called Canaletto sold for 2,225,250 GBP, its low estimate.

 

Portrait of an Elderly lady by the monogrammist IS

An oil on canvas by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754) titled David and Goliath (80 x 96,3 cm) went for 409, 250 GBP against a low estimate of 200,000 while a portrait of an elderly lady by the Dutch monogrammist IS(34,1 x 27,1 cm) active between 1633 and 1658 surprisingly sold for 577,250 GBP against an estimate of between 30,000 an 50,000.

Seven scenes from the life and veneration of  Saint Dymphna painted on oak panels by Goswijn Van der Weyden (circa 1465-after 1538) fetched 1,161,250 GBP against a low estimate of 1 million.

Virgin and Child by Luis de Morales

An oil on panel titled "The Virgin and Child, or La Virgen Del Sombrero "(66,5 x 46 cm) by Luis de Morales (circa 1520-1586?) reached almost five times its high estimate at 1,609,250 GBP while a pair of oil on canvas of a Roma view of the Campo Vaccino with the Arch of Septimus Severus and the temple of Saturn  and a view of Florence from the Cascine by Gaspar Van Wittel (1652/53-1736) sold for 713,250 GBP
