A RATHER LOW RETURN FOR PHILLIPS' SALE OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Phillips' sale of
contemporary art held on February 14, 2013 yielded a mere 9,762,950 GBP against pre-sale estimates of 10
to 15 million with 21 lots sold out of 33 offered to bidders.
The auction house fared
better than last year when it realized 5,7 million GBP thanks to some beefy
bids, notably that of 724,450 GBP, just above the low estimate- for Cecily
Brown's large oil on linen titled “East of Eden”.
Nate
Lowman's silkscreen on canvas titled “Green escalade” fetched 337, 250
GBP, well above its high estimate of 80,000 GBP while Ryan Sullivan's oil on
canvas titled “July 24,2011-September 28, 2011” (2011), that sold for 91,250
GBP against a high estimate of 40,000 GBP.
Christopher Wool's enamel on
aluminium “Untitled (P271)” produced in 1997 went for 1,665, and Mark Grotjahn's pencil abstract work on
paper “Untitled (Black and Canary Yellow butterfly) realised in 2008 sold for
457,250 GBP.
Andy
Warhol's “Tomato Juice Box” in silkscreen ink on panel
from 1964 fetched 223,250 GBP under its low estimate of 200,000 GBP while his “Hammer and Sickle”
of 1977 went for 247,250 GBP
Jean-Michel
Basquiat's “Untitled” pastel, oil stick, coloured crayon and charcoal
on paper from 1982 painstakingly sold for 1,945,250 GBP against a low estimate
of 1.8million while Dubuffet's “Le Chien Rodeur” from 1955 fetched 325,250 GBP
well under its low estimate of 400,000.
Yan Pei-Ming's oil on canvas “Invisible Man n. 1, 2000” painted in 2000 sold
for 163,250 GBP, under its low estimate of 200,000, Damien Hirst's “Untitled #2 (Spot Painting)” from
1992 went timidly for 295,250 GBP and Marc
Quinn's “Frozen Head,” a unique 2009 piece made of 10 kilograms of
18-carat gold, sold for 713,250 GBP.
