Just following Christie's record-setting half-billion-dollar result, Phillips's evening sale of Contemporary art held on May 16, 2013 in New York was far from meeting expectations as it recorded only 78,618,000 USD (with buyer's premium) with 30 lots sold out of the 37 lots offered.
The total did not match the May 2012 86.8 million USD sale though Philips sold 13 works for over a million dollars. Four lots went over four million dollars and one scored over $30 million.
Christopher Wool's text painting, “And If” (1992) (est.3-4 million) and Thomas Schütte's giant “Großer Geist Nr. 9” (1998), a Cor-ten steel sculpture of a striding man (est. 3,5-4,5 million). both sold for 4,085,000 USD. A C-print laminated on Plexiglas by Andreas Gursky, “Rhein” (1996), from an edition of five, fetched 1,925,000 USD (est. 1-1.5 million).
Wade Guyton's mirrored stainless steel “U sculpture (v.5)” (2007) from an edition of three plus one artist proof went to an anonymous telephone bidder for 365,000 USD (est. 250-350,000) while Nate Lowman's “Escalade” (2005-07) sold to another phone buyer for 545,000 USD (est. 400-600,000). Jean-Michel Basquiat's “Untitled (Soap)” (1983-84) was surprisingly unsold at 3.9 million USD (est. 5-7 million) but "Untitled" (1981) showing a baseball player managed to sell at 4,085,000 (est. 3,5-4,5 million USD)
Bought at Sotheby's New York in November 1998 for 2,312,500 USD, Andy Warhol's rare “Four Marilyns” (1962) provided the highest price of the evening with a 38,245,000 USD bid (est. 35-45 million) in favour of Larry Gagosian's gallery.
Another Warhol work, “Flowers” (1964), sold for 2,461,000 USD (est. $2-3 million) to Kristy Bryce, director of New York's Eykyn Maclean, a private gallery, while "Blue/Green Marilyn From Reversal series" (1979-86) by the same artist which sold at auction at Christie's New York in May 1996 for 46,000 USD, went for.1,325,000 US (est. 1-1.5 million)
Franz West's “Untitled (Two heads)” (2004), sold for 461,000 USD (est. 400-600,000) while Thomas Houseago's “Untitled” bronze head from 2010 went for 209,000 USD (est. 150-200,000) but overall Philips remained far behind Christie's and Sotheby's.
