CHRISTIE'S SALE OF IMPRESSIONIST & MODERN ART REALIZES OVER158 MILLION USD IN NEW YORK

Christie's sale of I m p r e s s i o n i s t
& M o d e r n art held in New York on May 8, 2013 totalled
158,505,000 (inclusive of buyers' costs) with a world auction price of 18,043,
750 USD recorded for Chaïm Soutine's
“Le Petit Pâtissier” painted circa
1927.
44 of the 47 lots offered for sale were sold,
notably Marc Chagall's “Three Acrobats” which was hammered at 13 million USD
against a high pre-sale estimate of 9 million.
Egon Schiele's
painting of 1913 titled "Selbstbildnis mit Modell
(Fragment)", fetched 11,3 million USD against a
high estimate of 7 million while Joan Miro's “Peinture” painted on April 29,
1933 sold for 10,987,750 USD under its estimate.
Pablo
Picasso's “Mandoline et Portée de musique”, an oil and sand work on canvas
executed in 1923 fetched 9,19 million
USD, just at its low estimate and the Spanish artist's “Femme assise en costume
rouge sur fond bleu” painted on March 6, 1953 went for 8,523,750 USD, just over
its low estimate, however a good score considering it was bought for a mere
662,500 USD in 1995.
Picasso's
pastel and charcoal work titled “Homme
et Femme” drawn on April 8, 1921 sold for 6,283,750 USD over its low estimate
and Amedeo Modigliani's painting “La Juive” executed circa 1907-1908 fetched
6,843,750 USD against a high estimate of 3 million USD.
Two
paintings by Claude Monet titled “Argenteuil, fin d'après-midi” and “Chemin” painted
in 1872 and 1885 sold respectively for 6,059,750 USD and 5,163,750 USD.
Overall, Christie's
fared somewhat fairly but under their expectations.
