SUCCESS FOR SOTHEBY'S ORIENTALIST SALE HELD ON APRIL 23, 2013 IN LONDON

The Orientalist Sale held by Sotheby's on April 23, 2013 in London achieved a total of £6.3 million, well in excess of the pre-sale high estimate (£2.6-3.8 million). New records were also set for Hermann Corrodi, Rudolf Weisse, and Georges Bretegnier.

The top lot was “The Offering,  (oil on panel, 61,5 x 80 cm) by Austrian artist Ludwig Deutsch'(1855-1935) which sold for 2, 154, 500 GBP (inclusive of buyer's premium) against a top pre-sale estimate of 700,000.

“The Fountain of the sweet waters of Asia on the Bosphorus” (oil on canvas, 86,5 x 165 cm) by the Italian painter Hermann Corrodi (1844-1905) fetched 518,500 GBP against a top pre-sale estimate of 300,000 while “Une Audience du Pacha à Tanger” (Oil on canvas, 124 x 174 cm) by Georges Bretegnier (French, 1860-1892) sold for 224,500 GBP against a top pre-sale estimate of 80,000.

“Sunrise over the Golden Horn” (oil on canvas, 70 x 99,5 cm) by Ippolito Caffi (Italian, 1809-1866) fetched 338,500 GBP against a top pre-sale estimate of 150,000. “Sidon looking towards the range of Lebanon” (oil on canvas, 58 x 114,5 cm) by British artist David Roberts (1796-1864) sold for 314,500 GBP against a top pre-sale estimate of 150,000.

“A Moment of Prayer” (Oil on panel, 60 x 48,5 cm) by Rudolf Weisse (Bohemia, 19th Century) recorded 422,500 GBP (estimate 180,000-250,000 GBP) while “The Learned Man of Cairo” (Oil on panel, 46 x 35,5 cm) by Arthur Von Ferraris (Hungarian, 1856-1936) sold for 182,500 GBP (Estimate 80,000-120,000 GBP)

“Caravane dans le désert”  (Oil on canvas, 49,5 x 81,5 cm) by Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904) sold for 470,500 GBP (Estimate 200,000-300,000 GBP) and « In the Classroom » (Oil on canvas, 77,5 x 112 cm) by Konstantin Makovsky (Russian, 1839-1915) fetched 290,500 against a top pre-sale estimate of 120,000 GBP.
