SOTHEBY'S SALE OF OLD MASTER PAINTINGS TOPS THE 9 MILLION USD MARK

Sotheby's sale of Old Master paintings held on June 6, 2013 in New York brought $9.2 million, over $2 million above the high estimate, with competitive bidding from all over the world, including Asia, Russia, Europe and the Americas. 

Leading the sale was Pieter Brueghel the Younger's Spring, which soared to $2.3 million, over two and a half times its high estimate. Also among the many lots selling above their estimate was Allegories of the Seasons by Sebastiaen Vrancx. The set of four paintings sold for $875,000.
 
"Elijah ascending to Heaven in the Fiery Chariot" by Flemish artist Herri Met de Bles (Circa 1510-After 1550) was sold for 112,500 USD (inclusive of buyer's premium) against a high estimate of 30,000 while a painting on panel of the circle of Joos Van Cleve titled "Virgin and sleeping Christ child" went for 100,000 USD.

A portrait of a bearded man, bust length, wearing a chain of guild buckles painted on panel by Adriaen Thomas Key (Circa 1544-After 1589) reached 112,500 USD against a high estimate of 35,000. A complete altarpiece from the Antwerp manierist school, early 16th Century, representing the Adoration of the Magi on the central panel and the donors with St John and St Margaret on the wings went for 257,000 USD against a high estimate of 150,000.

Meanwhile, an oil on panel showing the Death of the Virgin by the 15 th Century Master of the Eddelsberger Altar active in the Passau region circa 1481 sold for 197,000 USD against a high estimate of 120,000. "Sodom and Gomorrah", an oil on panel by Gillis Mostaert (Circa 1528-1598) sold for 43,750 USD at seven times its high estimate and an oil on panel showing a praying monk by Jan Massys (Circa 1509-1575) reached 185,000 USD equalling its high estimate.

A still life of fruit in a blue and white porcelain bowl with other objects resting on a stone ledge draped with an oriental carpet, an oil on canvas by Hendrik Van Streek (1659-After 1719) sold for 100,000 USD, almost tripling its high estimate. An oil on panel showing the Madonna and Child from the studio of Giovanni Bellini (1425/30-1516) went for  281,000 USD against a high estimate of 150,000.

The four panels of the Allegories of the Seasons by Sebastiaen Vranckx (1573-1647) sold for 875,000 USD against a high estimate of 500,000 while an oil on panel by Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564-1637/38) titled "Spring" went for 2,2285,000 USD against a high estimate of 900,000. Another Pieter Brueghel the Younger oil on panel titled "The Whitsun Bride" was hammered at 845,000 USD against a high estimate of 600,000 while a pair of portraits on panel showing a man and lady by Gerard Ter Borch (1617-1681) doubled its high estimate at 125,000 USD.

In addition, a still life of Tulips, roses, peonies and other flowers in a roemer by Jan Van Kessel the Elder (1626-1679) sold for 275,000 USD. A portrait of a Russian girl in blue dress and headdress by Pietro Antonio Rotari (1707-1762) went for 155,000 USD against a high estimate of 60,000. An oil on canvas by Michel Garnier (1753-1819) showing a young girl listening to a conversation between two lovers sold for 185,000 USD and a portrait of a young girl by Jean-Baptiste Greuze went for 257,000 USD against a high estimate of 150,000
