"Blackwell's Island," a large-scale oil work painted by American artist Edward Hopper in 1928, sold on May 23, 2013 for just over 19 million USD at Christie's in New York.
The painting shows the island, renamed for President Franklin Roosevelt in 1971, from across the East River with buildings. It had recently been included in the first major retrospective of Hopper's work at the Grand Palais in Paris. It also was exhibited in museums, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
