MITIGATED SUCCESS FOR A SALE OF L.S LOWRY PAINTINGS

Sotheby's held an evening sale in London of 15 paintings by Laurence Stephen Lowry, one of Britain's most sought artists, on 25th March 2014 which totalled 15,24 million GBP in line with the pre-sale estimate but a bit far from expectations.
The A.J. Thompson Collection included well-known masterpieces that have previously been exhibited in the Tate's highly acclaimed retrospective in 2013. A.J. Thompson, who only collected artworks by Lowry, bought his first painting by the artist at Sotheby's in 1982 before he decided to put together one of the greatest collection of the artist's work in recent history. Frances Christie, Sotheby's Head of Modern & Post-War British Art Department said she was delighted with the results of the sale, which reflected the superb quality of the works that Tony Thompson collected so carefully over the course of three decades. Still, most of the paintings offered for sale sold within the estimates, like "After the Fire" (842,400 GBP inclusive of buyer's premium against an estimate of 700,000-1 million), "Town Square" (2,490,500 GBP against an estimate of 1,500,000-2,500,000), "Election Time" (746,500 GBP against an estimate of 600,000-800,000), "The Hawker's Cart" (578,500 GBP against an estimate of 600,000-800,000), "A River Bank" (1,986,500 GBP against an estimate of 1,500,000-2,500,000), "Punch and Judy" (962,500 GBP against an estimate of 1 million and 1,5 million), "Market Place, Berwick-upon-Tyne" (578,500 GBP against an estimate of 600,000-800,000), "Piccadilly Circus, London" (5,122,500 GBP against an estimate of 4 million to 6 million GBP) or "The Orator" (386,500 GBP against an estimate of 400,000-600,000) while "Musicians" sold for 842,500 GBP (Estimate 600,000-800,000)
