Edouard Manet's 1881 portrait of the
actress Jeanne Demarsy in a flowery dress and bonnet titled "Le Printemps" was sold in favour of the Paul
Getty Museum by Christie's on November 5, 2014 in New York for 65.1 million US, well above its high estimate
of $35 million.
Timothy Potts, the museum
head, said it was a beautiful, lovable
and captivating painting. This was one of the last of Manet's Salon paintings
still in private hands.
The sale totaled 165.6 million
USD, above its high $157.8 million estimate. with 35 out of 39 works sold.
Alberto Giacometti's “Stèle II,” a bronze sculpture of a man
perched on a high plinth conceived in
1958 and cast in 1962, sold for 9.9 million USD, well above its 6.5 million
estimate.
Joan Miro's “Tuilerie à
Mont-Roig” painted in 1918 went for 8.6 million USD against a low estimate of
5 million.
Georges Braque's 1918 painting “Guitare et Rhum,” fetched 4.6 million USD,
above its $3 million estimate. Gino Severini's pastel from 1912-13, “Etude pour Autoportrait au Canotier,” far exceeded its 1,5 million estimate to reach 4.7 million USD and Picasso's 1913 “Figure,” a collage made in 1913 sold
for 4.3 million USD, again well above its 2.5 million high estimate.
Magritte's “Mesdemoiselles de L'Isle Adam,” showing
two silhouetted naked women on a beach, fetched 4.9 million, just under its low 5 million estimate while works by Miró and van Gogh sold well under their expected estimates.
