NEW JEWISH MUSEUM TO OPEN IN PARIS

The new Museum of Judaic Art and History will open 71, rue du Temple in Paris, not far from the Georges Pompidou museum of Modern Art in October 1998.

The museum will be housed in the 17th century Hôtel de Saint-Aignan also not far from the Jewish compound of rue des Rosiers where Jews have been used to live since the Middle Age.
It will replace the former Museum of rue des Saules which had been set up 50 years ago.

Collections of Jewish artefacts from the Cluny Museum near the Sorbonne University and of the former Jewish museum will be reunited in the renovated building which will also receive other collections originating from Jewish institutions.
All the paintings listed as stolen by the Nazis during the War and kept in French museums pending claims for their return by heirs of those who were victims of spoliations will also be shown in the new museum.
