Rabin (Rabine), Oskar Yakovlevich Naissance - mort : 1928- Nationalité : Russian
Orphaned at the age of four, Rabin was adopted by the Russian painter Evgeny Kropivinitsky who was his first teacher. He then studied at the Academy of Arts in Riga from 1946 until 1948 and the Surikov Institute of Arts in Moscow until he was expelled for “Formalism” in 1949. He started to take part in exhibitions in Moscow in 1957 and then went on to insinuate everyday objects into his paintings. He regularly exhibited abroad from 1965 but faced problems with the Soviet authorities. As a result of his crucial role in organising the 1974 “Bulldozer” exhibition Rabin was expelled from his local union of artists and became a target of harassment in the official press. Stripped of his Soviet citizenship in 1978, he left for France and had his first solo exhibition in 1984 in the U.S. Rabin notably evoked the plight of the Jewish people in his works and one of them, titled “Jewish Passport”, was considered as being one of his best paintings.
